1st May Holiday in Pakistan 2025 Confirmed by Govt?

The Government of Pakistan has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, a public holiday across the country to observe Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or Youm-e-Mazdoor. This annual holiday honors the contributions and struggles of workers, celebrating their role in building the nation’s economy. A notification issued by the Cabinet Division on December 23, 2024, confirms that most institutions will remain closed, allowing workers and citizens to participate in events or enjoy a day off.

Which Institutions Will Be Closed?

Labour Day is a gazetted public holiday in Pakistan, meaning a nationwide closure for the general population. The following institutions and offices will remain closed on May 1, 2025:

  • Government Offices: All federal and provincial government offices, including ministries, secretariats, and administrative departments, will be closed, except for essential services like emergency response and utilities.
  • Educational Institutions: Public and private schools, colleges, universities, and other academic institutions across all provinces—Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—will observe the holiday.
  • Private Sector Offices: Most private companies, corporate offices, and businesses will shut down, though some retail and service sectors may operate with limited hours.
  • Banks: Commercial banks and financial institutions will be closed for public dealings, though internal operations may continue. ATMs and online banking services will remain functional.
  • Hospitals and Health Services: Government and private hospitals will maintain essential services, such as emergency wards and critical care, but non-emergency departments and administrative offices may close.
  • Courts and Judicial Offices: Federal and provincial courts, including district courts, will suspend operations for the day.
  • Public Transport: While some public transport may operate, government-run transport offices and depots will likely be closed.

Essential services, such as police, fire brigades, and utility providers (electricity, water, and gas), will continue to function to ensure public safety and convenience.

Significance of Labour Day in Pakistan

Labour Day commemorates the global labor movement, particularly the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers fought for an eight-hour workday. In Pakistan, the holiday was officially recognized in 1972 with the introduction of the first Labour Policy. It serves as a reminder of workers’ rights, fair wages, and safe working conditions.

On May 1, labor unions and organizations across cities like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar will hold rallies, marches, and seminars. These events highlight challenges faced by workers, such as low wages and workplace safety, while promoting solidarity. Colorful processions with banners and placards are expected, especially in urban centers.
