Punjab Government Decided to Manufacture Electric Buses Locally

In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, the Punjab government has decided to manufacture electric buses locally, shifting from its earlier plan of importing them. This decision aims to promote eco-friendly public transport, reduce foreign exchange expenditure, and bolster local industry.

Shift from Import to Local Manufacturing

Initially, the government planned to import electric buses. However, in May 2025, it cancelled international tenders for importing these buses, opting instead to procure them through direct local manufacturing . This strategic shift is designed to:

  • Save foreign exchange reserves by reducing imports.
  • Promote local industry and create job opportunities.
  • Ensure timely delivery and maintenance of buses.

Manufacturing Plans

The local manufacturing will be centered in Faisalabad, a city known for its industrial base. The plan includes:

  • Establishing manufacturing facilities in collaboration with local and international partners.
  • Ensuring quality standards are met for durability and efficiency.
  • Training local workforce to handle production and maintenance.

Deployment of Electric Buses

The government has approved the deployment of 1,500 electric buses across various cities in Punjab. The rollout plan is as follows :

  • Phase 1: Introduction of 380 electric buses in Lahore and Gujranwala by June 2025 .
  • Subsequent Phases: Expansion to cities including Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Multan, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Infrastructure Development

To support the electric bus initiative, the government is focusing on:

  • Constructing dedicated electric bus tracks in cities like Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
  • Establishing charging stations to ensure uninterrupted bus operations.
  • Setting up a modern transport command and control center in Lahore for efficient management.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The local manufacturing and deployment of electric buses are expected to:

  • Reduce air pollution and combat smog in urban areas.
  • Lower operational costs compared to traditional diesel buses.
  • Create employment opportunities in manufacturing and maintenance sectors.
  • Enhance public transport accessibility for residents across Punjab.
